34th anniversary of Ukraine’s restored independence

BINGHAMTON N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – This Sunday marks the 34th anniversary of Ukraine’s restored independence, and the city of Binghamton hosted a special ceremony today in its honor.

Many gathered outside of Binghamton City Hall with Ukrainian flags, clothing and songs to commemorate Independence Day and stand in solidarity as Ukraine is still at war with Russia after three long years since Russia invaded.

Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham declared today as Ukrainian Independence Day in the city of Binghamton.

He says that this flag raising ceremony isn’t only being done amidst the war, as Ukrainian independence has been celebrated in Binghamton for many years.

Mayor Jared Kraham says, “We’ve been doing this for many decades, but it is now more important than ever to recognize the unbelievable contributions of the Ukrainian community to the city of Binghamton. You have helped make our city the city that it is. And that we reaffirm our local support for the global effort.”

The ceremony featured reverends and pastors leading prayers for Ukraine, speeches from Ukrainian Veterans, Ukrainian songs played by musicians and more.

It concluded with all the children in attendance helping Mayor Kraham raise the Ukrainian flag that stands tall over city hall amidst the global conflict.
