49ers’ Trent Williams Explains Why Super Bowl Loss to Chiefs Doesn’t Matter

San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams isn’t thinking about last year’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in Super Bowl LVII ahead of the rivalry matchup Sunday.

“When you think about the reality of it, we can beat [the Chiefs] by 100, but we’re not popping champagne, confetti is not going to fall,” Williams told KNBR. “It can never be an even, or a payback, situation so why even carry that grudge?”

Super Bowl LVII went into overtime after the Chiefs tied the game. Although the 49ers won the coin flip for the extra minutes, they came up empty handed and the Chiefs earned another championship ring.

“Football is 90 percent mental, 10 percent physical,” Williams added. “If your mind is clouded with stuff that has nothing to do with Sunday, then you can run the risk of not being everything you want to be.”

The Chiefs are heading into the Week 7 matchup missing several starters. Star running back Isiah Pacheco has been sidelined since Week 2 of the season. Additionally, Kansas City has played without its two best receivers in Rashee Rice and Marquise Brown.

Nevertheless, the Chiefs are 5-0 to start the season. It’ll be a tough task for the 49ers, who struggle to beat Kansas City at full form, and will be missing key players on Sunday.

The 49ers have also been dealing with numerous injuries this season and their record has been reflective of the injuries. Although Christian McCaffrey is starting to practice, he won’t be on the field against Kansas City.

The 49ers also announced that wide receiver Jauan Jennings is out for Sunday’s game. Starting kicker Jake Moody is still dealing with a high ankle sprain and backup kicker Matt Wright will be placed on injured reserve.

That leaves Anders Carlson to kick for San Francisco on Sunday.

Running back Jordan Mason is ready to go for Sunday, according to Shanahan.

The long-awaited debut of rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall will be made against the Chiefs. After being shot in an attempted robbery, Pearsall has made a miraculous recovery in less than two months.

“The guys are pumped,” Shanahan said of Pearsall’s return. “He’s had a hell of a week and we’re just pumped to get him out there with us.”

The return of the rookie should provide a boost of morale for the 49ers as they seek to rise above .500 on Sunday. There will be a lot of moving parts for San Francisco in this rivalry matchup, but it would make a triumph over Kansas City all the more impressive.
