Germany urges citizens to leave Iran amid nuclear dispute

The Foreign Office in Berlin has issued a warning against travelling to Iran, while also urging German nationals to leave the country.

The German Embassy in Tehran is currently only able to provide limited consular assistance, the ministry said on Friday on its website, confirming the previous day’s advisory.

The position stems from the escalating nuclear dispute with Iran and the decision by Germany, France and Britain to trigger the so-called snapback mechanism due to repeated Iranian violations of a nuclear agreement.

The snapback mechanism serves to reimpose sanctions on Iran if it fails to comply with its obligations under the 2015 Vienna nuclear deal.

As Iranian officials have in the past threatened consequences in such cases, it cannot be ruled out that German interests and citizens in Iran will be affected by countermeasures, according to the Foreign Office.
