Chargers Interested in Bringing Back Former LA Receiver in Midseason Trade

The Los Angeles Chargers and New York Jets wide receiver Mike Williams could be in for a reunion ahead of the NFL trade deadline on Nov. 5.

The Chargers are one of the many teams that have inquired about trading for the veteran receiver. A reunion is certainly plausible for two reasons.

The Chargers are in need of a star receiver and Williams has fallen lower on the Jets’ depth chart since the arrival of Davante Adams.

Williams most recently made headlines after Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers called him out for running the wrong route which resulted in a game-sealing pick last week.

“I wasn’t calling Mike out for anything but his responsibility and the details on that play,” Rodgers told NBC Sports. “I have a lot of love and respect for Mike. He does some nice things for us. On that play, he wasn’t in the right spot. You can make more of that if you want to, but we all should be held to a standard.”

The public ousting of Williams may have led to his absence from Wednesday’s practice for “personal reasons.” However, nothing has been confirmed.

The Chargers don’t have a high-profile receiver on their roster. Both Keenan Allen and Mike Williams left Los Angeles and landed with new teams in the offseason.

Williams was cut from the team as he was coming off a torn Achilles injury but was picked up by the Jets. Allen was unwilling to take a pay cut and landed in the windy city with the Chicago Bears.

The Chargers added DJ Chark to the roster and drafted Ladd McConkey. However, Chark has been sidelined by injury for the entire season and McConkey is settling into his role as a slot target.

DJ Chark has yet to make his debut for the Chargers because of a hip injury he suffered in August. The wideout was placed on injured reserve just one day before the team’s season opener.

On Wednesday, the Chargers activated Chark’s 21-day practice window. But the Chargers are still faced with the same problem. The team has no offensive weapon that serves as a deep-field threat to opposing secondaries.

Even if Chark were to take the field, he would be just one deep-field weapon for the Chargers. Herbert has had to adjust to a brand-new offense this season and Williams is a weapon he understands and trusts.

His return could help the Chargers passing game immensely.
