George Clooney’s Favorite Leather Jacket Is British
George Clooney has had a thing for leather jackets since ’80s and ’90s (there’s one very moodboard-y photo of him from 1989 with surfer hair and a biker grail—see below). That’s way before Ocean’s Eleven, way before those Nespresso ads, and right about the time he started growing into that signature salt-and pepper-lid. But now, he’s looking to the Brits for an upgrade.
While heading to a New York screening of the film Jay Kelly—directed by Noah Baumbach and starring Clooney alongside Adam Sandler and Laura Dern—over the weekend, the Hollywood titan pulled up to the Crosby Hotel wearing a black leather jacket from the UK label Belstaff.
Founded in Stoke-on-Trent, England back in 1924, Belstaff originally made clothes for motorcyclists. Over the decades though, it’s become a go-to outerwear brand for famous guys all over like David Beckham, Steve McQueen, and even Che Guevara.
Clooney’s jacket featured a classic biker collar with a single snap button that he left undone, plus twin side pockets and an extra zippered pocket on the left arm. It’s slightly cropped, and judging by the lowercase logo on his sleeve, it’s probably from an older collection. And if so, it looks practically brand new—a sign he clearly takes care of his stuff. Which, honestly, we could all stand to do more of. Look after your leather, guys.
In recent years, Belstaff has shifted gears to try cater to younger guys. Last November, the brand linked up with the Manchester label Represent for a capsule of hoodies, cargos, and checkerboard knits (because motorbikes). This summer, it dropped a collab with Merrell, reimagining the cult-y Moab Luxe Hiker.
And in case you can’t find Clooney’s exact leather jacket anymore, Belstaff’s still dropping some killer alternatives. Tuck in.
