Giants Predicted To Steal $152 Mets Million Slugger In Free Agency
The San Francisco Giants were reportedly one of the teams showing serious interest in signing first baseman Paul Goldschmidt this winter. But on Saturday afternoon, Goldschmidt agreed to a one-year, $12.5 million deal with the New York Yankees.
How will the Giants respond to missing out on Goldschmidt?
FanSided’s Zachary Rotman recently suggested the Giants could pivot to New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso in free agency following their whiff on Goldschmidt.

“The Mets still loom as a fit, but why can’t the Giants take advantage of a clearly depleted market? Alonso is probably looking for a massive deal, but considering the lack of realistic suitors for his services, he won’t get that absurd payday,” Rotman wrote. “If the Giants can sign him to a similar kind of deal that they signed Blake Snell and Matt Chapman to last offseason, Alonso makes a whole lot of sense.
“He’d add another big bat to this lineup and make the Giants legitimate Wild Card threats while also opening the door for him to cash in next offseason (like Snell) or even sign long-term with San Francisco (like Chapman).”
The idea of the Giants entering the Alonso sweepstakes will likely depend on how Corbin Burnes’ free agency ends. As of now, the belief is the Giants are the favorites to land Burnes, which would likely financially eliminate them from signing Alonso.
But if San Francisco whiffs on Burnes as well, it needs to spend the money somewhere, and signing a perennial 40 home run slugger would be a great place to upgrade.
