GM V8 Engines Trigger Another Lawsuit

For some time, it’s been known GM’s L87 V8 engine is nothing but problems, but yet another lawsuit might be helping to rectify things. Another class-action suit has been filed against the automaker with the claim that the previous recall work still didn’t fix what’s wrong with the engine.

GM is doubling down on manufacturing in Korea.

Social media has shown a constant stream of new Chevy, Cadillac, and GMC vehicles loaded onto wreckers after the engine has given up the ghost. After the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration got involved  and a recall was issued for GM trucks and SUVs powered by the L87, many assumed that was the end of the saga.

There’s been plenty of postulating about what’s wrong with the L87, like the crankshafts being faulty from the start, problems with overheating, bad connecting rods, etc. But the latest class action lawsuit claims GM knew the V8 engine was faulty before vehicles were sold.

While under the recall the L87 has been replaced, the lawsuit claims the replacement engines as just as bad and doomed to fail as well.

What’s more, the new class action lawsuit claims the L87 has defects stretching back to the 2019 model year. That’s interesting considering the NHTSA recall was only for 2021 to 2024 models. It will be interesting to see how this plays out in court, or more likely outside of it, and if it forces GM to take further action.

The problems with the L87 have been a major black eye for GM at a time when consumers have been trying to snatch up V8-powered vehicles amidst a push to shrink engine sizes and replace cylinders with forced induction and/or electric motors.

Has the L87 fiasco harmed GM sales or will it moving forward? Are consumers unaware or are they willing to take the gamble and get a vehicle with one anyway?
