Hamas welcomes Macron’s pledge to recognize Palestinian state
Hamas has welcomed French President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement that France will recognize Palestine as a state, calling it a positive step toward achieving justice and self-determination for the Palestinian people.
In a statement, the Islamist group urged other countries, particularly in Europe, to follow France’s lead and reaffirmed its goal of establishing a sovereign Palestinian state with Jerusalem as its capital.
Macron said on Thursday evening on X that he would announce the recognition of Palestine as a state at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
The move has drawn sharp criticism from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other Israeli officials, who argue it would reward Hamas and undermine prospects for peace.
