How cold did it get Wednesday night?

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A burst of arctic air dropped our lows to below zero last night in KELOLAND. Meteorologist Jaelyn Borresen explains when these kinds of temperatures typically occur.

It was an extremely cold start to our Thursday in KELOLAND as an arctic high-pressure system sank in behind a cold front.

Temperatures overnight fell to below zero for East River. Aberdeen already did this on November 30th, but in Sioux Falls, the last time that this occurred was on Feburary 21st. Compared to last winter, this is way earlier as we did not have our first below zero low temperature until January 8th of this year.

When you look at the record books though, it is almost on time with our average of December 6th. Further to the west, Rapid City had an early arrival of these kinds of temperatures. They dropped to a low of minus 10 for the last day of November and it ended up breaking their previous record set in 1985.

Now it does feel fitting to start off Meteorological winter with a blast of cold air. We will change this up for the start of the weekend though with near to above average temperatures before an Alberta Clipper cools some of us down on Sunday.
