How to Dress Like You’re on a ’90s Hollywood Red Carpet
Next month, we’re fêting GQ’s 30th Men of the Year issue with a massive bash in Los Angeles. The dress code for the evening—’90s Hollywood Red Carpet—is an homage to the decade that started it all.
Ahead of the GQ MOTY 30 party, we’re finding style inspiration among our favorite glam-meets-grunge red carpet moments from the 1990s. To be sure, this is no Saved by the Bell costume party—no neon scrunchies or acid-wash jeans here. While fashion has been in the midst of a ’90s revival for years now (as we all collectively yearn for a bygone era before smartphones), these days we’re especially digging the dressier, self-styled, laissez-faire formalwear vibe of Hollywood premieres and awards shows of yore.
Think: Céline Dion rocking a backwards white John Galliano tuxedo. Will Smith and Leonardo DiCaprio letting their shirt collars hang loose, Tony Montana-style. Tyson Beckford accessorizing his pinstriped suit with a cigar. Matt LeBlanc pulling up to the 1999 Emmys with his broken arm in a custom leather Chrome Hearts sling.
