How to Take Advantage of January’s New Moon and the Fresh Energy It Brings
The new year may not quite be here yet, but Jetteke van Lexmond, cofounder of the Moonsisters, already knows that the transition between 2025 and 2026 is going to feel a bit easier than past years. “The energy between the two years is much more fluid than before,” van Lexmond, who has an incredibly popular Moon Calendar, says. “We are really entering a new energetic era. You may have felt it already, as we have been immersed in this frequency for several weeks.”
Currently, we’re in Capricorn season—it’s an energy full of pressure and may create a tug-of-war feeling. “You can choose to experience the Capricorn energy in two ways: As challenging and frightening, because escaping, ignoring, or returning to the old no longer works. Or as liberating and tingling, because movement and inspiration are finally flowing again.”
But many people are also feeling restlessness or impatience at the moment. A pulsating energy in the body that can no longer be ignored. “The heart feels and knows what the mind does not yet understand—or cannot yet understand.”
Capricorn season ends on January 19—but halfway through it, on January 3, we get a new moon in Cancer. Here’s what that means.
Capricorn energy meets a full moon in Cancer
After all the rather hard, masculine energy of Capricorn (van Lexmond describes the earth sign as “associated with ambition, structure and responsibility”), the full moon in Cancer ( a “water sign associated with feminine energy and stands for emotional security, care, and home,” says van Lexmond) comes to fruition on January 3, 2026. And stress not—it finally brings with it a wave of gentle, feminine energy.
Capricorn and Cancer are directly opposite each other in the zodiac, which is exciting news for those of us who need a bit of relief. This dichotomy can lead to tensions between feeling and thinking, between being and doing. All in all, it’s a “cosmic dance” that reminds us that true strength is not only to be found in perseverance, but also in allowing, nurturing, and slowing down.
“You may feel a conflict between your head and your heart,” van Lexmond adds. “If you do, try to notice how this full moon allows these opposites to work together. They can complement each other perfectly. True balance occurs when the masculine and feminine energies within us are in harmony.”
The sensitive Cancer teaches the pragmatic Capricorn to express their feelings, while the responsible Capricorn offers the Cancer stability and a sense of security. “This creates a strong and harmonious relationship that combines depth with practical, down-to-earth strength,” van Lexmond adds.
Have faith that some things simply need to be let go of
This full moon also brings up a reminder: try to let go of the need for control, and instead trust the process. This freedom creates the space to recognize “that certain structures and patterns have completed their cycle. Not everything needs to be restored and repaired; some things you should simply let go of gently.”
