Howie Mandel recounts finding wife Terry in pool of blood in Las Vegas
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
Actor Howie Mandel recently shared a horrifying experience involving his wife, Terry Mandel, during their trip to Las Vegas, Nevada.
The America’s Got Talent judge recounted the incident on the Monday, June 17 episode of Live With Kelly and Mark with his signature blend of humor and candor. “We partied … like it was too much,” Mandel confessed to hosts Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos. The 68-year-old comedian explained that after a lively night out, he and Terry returned to their hotel room and went to bed.
In the middle of the night, an unexpected mishap occurred. “She was tipsy, I did not know that,” The Crown Heights actor revealed. “I don’t know where she was headed, but she headed into the wall and she fell.” He continued, saying how Terry hit her face on the wainscoting, resulting in a broken cheek.
Mandel shared a graphic photo of Terry’s injuries, which included deep bruising and cuts on her eye and forehead. Despite the severity of the situation, he managed to inject some humor, saying, “People say, ‘What happened?’ She says, ‘Vegas!'” Though he laughed about it later, the initial moment was terrifying as he went into detail about the incident.
Awakened by the sound of the crash and his wife’s cries of pain, the TV personality turned on the light to find his wife lying face down in a pool of her own blood. “I freaked out,” he admitted. He mentioned how he moved Terry to the bed and tried to stop the bleeding with towels, improvising ice packs with cold cans of soda from the minibar.
When Terry reacted to the intense cold and pain when applying the can, she promptly threw it across the room, leading Howie to see the extent of her injuries. “You could actually see her skull—it opened up. So I freaked. And I went, ‘Oh my God, this is the love of my life,'” he recalled.
Mandel quickly called the front desk and urged them to dial 911. Security guards arrived promptly, documenting the scene, which made Howie feel like a suspect. “If somebody was ever beat up in that room, I promise it would be me,” he joked. “I am the most annoying person in the world. My wife is a saint.”
Despite still being drunk, Terry was taken to the hospital. At one point, she panicked, telling doctors she couldn’t see, not realizing she was holding a sheet over her face. Consuelos humorously asked if Mandel’s role as Dr. Wayne Fiscus on St. Elsewhere had helped in the scenario, to which Howie responded, “You realize that’s pretend? I’m not really a doctor.”
Fortunately, Terry recovered fully from the accident and doesn’t even have so much as a scar, according to Mandel.
