Italy detains German ship after migrant rescue in Mediterranean

Italy has again detained a ship belonging to SOS Humanity, a German aid organization rescuing migrants in the Mediterranean, the group said on Saturday.

The Humanity 1 must remain in the port of Trapani on the island of Sicily for 60 days before it is allowed to leave again. In addition, the authorities have imposed a fine of €10,000 ($11,870).

The Humanity 1 rescued 33 people and recovered two bodies during its most recent mission, SOS Humanity said.

The Italian government justified the detention on the grounds that the crew once again violated regulations on the high seas.

Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi criticized what he called “irresponsible behaviour” that also endangered the lives of migrants.

SOS Humanity confirmed that the crew did not communicate with the Libyan maritime rescue coordination centre, accusing the authority of “serious human rights violations against those seeking protection.”

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government announced stricter migration policies on Wednesday, including a plan to stop boats by introducing a “sea blockade” if necessary.

Every year, tens of thousands of people arrive by boat on Italy’s shores illegally, with many setting off from Libya.
