Klay Thompson Chose the Perfect Rolex to Hard Launch His Megan Thee Stallion Relationship
Over the weekend, Klay Thompson just about broke the internet by posting of himself canoodling and holding hands with Megan Thee Stallion. Hidden in plain sight, however, there was one minor detail I couldn’t shake: Swipe far enough through the Instagram carousel, and you’ll discover that in addition to someone new on his arm, the four-time NBA champ has something dazzling on his wrist as well. Thompson’s hard launch with his new boo included a close-up of his Rolex Yacht-Master II. It was the perfect watch for Thompson to include—because if you’re going to date the Dallas Mavericks guard, his Yacht-Master speaks to a few of his quirks you’ll want to be acquainted with.

For starters, Thompson is famously a man of the seas. During his 13-year stint with the Golden State Warriors, Thompson would regularly drive his boat to home games. His Instagram profile picture, meanwhile, depicts him wearing a boat captain’s hat. The Yacht-Master II is just another nod to Thompson’s nautical predilections.
The Yacht-Master has been around for a surprisingly long time. The original model debuted back in 1992 as a souped-up luxury version of the Submariner. Where the Sub is a tool watch that appeals to those who know their way around a diving regulator, the YM gave Rolex a lane to splash out its iconic diving design with precious metals and mother-of-pearl dials. Thompson’s timepiece is the Yacht-Master II, the sequel to the original that was released in 2007.
Like Thompson himself, the YMII combines quiet functionality with the occasional volcanic flash. Where the original Yacht-Master was all about upping the materials, the second iteration introduced a novel technical innovation to the Rolex line. This was the first watch from the Crown to include a Regatta timer for yacht racing. (That’s the funny thing about this watch: it’s built for to perform on high-tech racing boats, but spiritually makes more sense to be worn when lounging on the type of megayachts that dock at Monaco.) Thompson’s version is one of the classic YMII makeups: a sexy yellow-gold case with a sea-blue bezel.
Congratulations to the happy couple. And some advice to Meg, should things progress even further: There is no better engagement gift for a man than a Rolex—and now you know exactly which model to get.
