Lansing protest highlights Sudan’s ongoing humanitarian crisis

LANSING, Mich. (WLNS) — Flags and signs filled the Capitol this afternoon to raise awareness of the ongoing conflict in Sudan, described as a humanitarian crisis and a proxy war.

The demonstration highlighted the severe impact of the conflict, with millions displaced and numerous deaths reported. Organizers aimed to shed light on the struggles faced by Sudanese families, both in Sudan and abroad.

Siham Hassan, a Sudanese organizer, shared her personal loss due to the conflict, stating, “I’ve lost a cousin from the genocide. My mom lost my mom’s sister’s husband was killed.” Sahar Hussein, a Sudanese Michigander, attributed the war to greed over Sudan’s gold resources, saying, “It’s happening because these people live in a land full of gold. And it’s just simply happening because of greed.”

Ahmad Hassan and Mia Zaben expressed solidarity with Sudan, drawing parallels to the struggles faced in Palestine, noting, “There’s an erasure happening of both people. We’re being wiped out in our countries.”

Siham Hassan hopes that by raising awareness through brightly colored signs and megaphones, people will become more educated about the crisis in Sudan. She emphasized the importance of being a voice for the voiceless and speaking up where possible, stating, “The only way we can bring change is to be able to educate ourselves and really just be aware about what’s happening around us.”

As the crisis continues, demonstrators at the Capitol hope their efforts will lead to increased awareness and ultimately, change for Sudan.
