Lufthansa Technik, the aircraft maintenance subsidiary of German airline Lufthansa, has struck a licensing deal with US aircraft manufacturer Boeing to overhaul the interiors of Boeing 787 aircraft.

Lufthansa and Boeing revealed the agreement at the Farnborough International Airshow in the United Kingdom on Monday.

The deal makes Lufthansa Technik the first company in the world with such far-reaching authorizations to overhaul Boeing aircraft and have the planes certified by regulators.

Up until now, cabin interior modifications and certification by the supervisory authorities were reserved for the manufacturer.

Lufthansa Technik says it offers the entire range of services for such conversions and refers to its own experience with aircraft for private customers or special missions.

Lufthansa manager Andrew Muirhead told the German newspaper Handelsblatt that an aircraft cabin is modernized approximately every seven years.
