Mary Trump warns of new “fear” if Donald Trump wins election

Former President Donald Trump‘s estranged niece, Mary Trump, wrote in a blog post Tuesday that she is fearful of what a second Trump administration could look like in the White House.

The former president has slightly pulled ahead in national polls since the first presidential debate on June 27 against President Joe Biden, where Biden’s performance sparked concerns over his cognitive ability to serve another four years.

Mary Trump wrote to her Substack page, however, that the United States “appears to be experiencing cognitive decline. That’s the only way I can explain the short memories that have erased the horrors of my uncle’s catastrophic four years in the Oval Office.”

The clinical psychologist and author, who is a frequent critic of Donald Trump, went on to list several policy decisions made by her uncle that she wishes she “could forget,” including Trump’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and his actions related to the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol.

“But I can’t forget any of that,” Mary Trump wrote. “And I’m determined not to let the rest of the country forget it either. One of our goals has to be to remind as many people as possible just how bad things were and warn them that things will be so much worse—if we keep forgetting.”

“If we fail, I fear he will do things to this country and its people that we will never be able to forget,” she concluded. “Or forgive.”

Newsweek on Wednesday reached out to the former president’s campaign via email for comment on Mary Trump’s blog post.

Mary Trump has publicly endorsed Biden since his first debate blunder, including writing on X, formerly Twitter, last week, that she was “proud to support the best presidential administration of my lifetime. American democracy depends on making sure we defeat my fascist uncle and his enablers in November. #WeBackBidenHarris.”

As of Wednesday, 12 sitting Democrats have called on the president to step aside as the party’s nominee ahead of November, expressing concerns over his ability to beat Trump. As New York Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado wrote in a statement, Democrats say that there “is no greater threat to our democracy than former President Donald Trump.”

“He must be defeated,” Delgado added to the statement posted to X on Wednesday. “That is why I join with millions of Americans … who are expressing legitimate concerns about President Biden’s ability to wage a successful campaign against Trump.”

Polling analysis site FiveThirtyEight reports that on average, Trump is leading Biden by 2.2 percentage points across national polling as of Wednesday. Before the June 27 debate, Trump held only a 0.2 percent lead.
