Mets Would Land $28 Million Pete Alonso Replacement in 5-Player Trade Idea
The New York Mets still have a hole at first base with spring training fast approaching. While free-agent slugger Pete Alonso makes the most sense to fill that void, president of baseball operations David Stearns could be looking elsewhere for external solutions. Is there a way he could trade for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. of the Toronto Blue Jays?
Stearns and the Mets have reportedly checked in on Guerrero’s availability as negotiations with Alonso continue to drag on. New York will also look at internal options such as fellow infielders Mark Vientos and Brett Baty. Newly re-signed Jesse Winker could also be an option.
However, none of these options would be as good as either bringing Alonso back or finding a way to land Guerrero. What might it take for the Mets to pry the 25-year-old slugger from Toronto?

Ballcap Sports’ Jim Riley evaluated hypothetical trades in a recent video. While looking at two specific ideas involving the Mets and Blue Jays for Guerrero, he came up with his own proposal:
- Mets receive: first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr.
- Blue Jays receive: infielder Ronny Mauricio, right-handed pitcher Blade Tidwell, right-handed pitcher Tylor Megill, and outfielder Drew Gilbert
This would give the Mets an elite slugger to protect outfielder Juan Soto in the lineup. He’ll make $28.5 million in 2025 before reaching free agency. It’d also give Toronto two MLB-ready players in Megill and Mauricio, as well as a pair of top prospects in Tidwell and Gilbert. Additionally, it would open a spot for the Jays to potentially sign Alonso.
The Blue Jays trading away Guerrero seems unlikely right now, especially after committing $92.5 million to outfielder Anthony Santander over the next five seasons. But until Guerrero signs an extension, the possibility of a trade will continue to linger.
