Netanyahu says that Hamas leader Mohammed al-Sinwar has been killed

The Israeli military has killed Mohammed al-Sinwar, the younger brother of former Hamas leader Yehya al-Sinwar, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday.

In a speech to parliament, Netanyahu listed several Hamas leaders killed by Israel, including Mohammed al-Sinwar. After his brother’s death, he was considered the new strongman in the Palestinian Islamist militia.

Israeli media reported that Mohammed al-Sinwar was the target of an Israeli attack on a hospital in Khan Younis in the southern Gaza Strip more than two weeks ago.

Defence Minister Israel Katz said al-Sinwar had been “eliminated” in the attack. There has been no official confirmation of his death from the Israeli army.

Hamas has also not yet commented on the matter.

Several people were killed in the attack. The Israeli army said without giving further details that it was a “precise strike against Hamas terrorists in a command and control centre.”

After the Israeli military killed Hamas military chief Mohammed Deif last year, Mohammed al-Sinwar became the new head of Hamas’ armed wing, al-Qassam Brigades.
