Netanyahu’s office slams Belgian PM as a ‘weak leader’ seeking to appease ‘Islamic terrorism’

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office slammed Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever in a Wednesday post to X/Twitter as a “weak leader” after the country’s foreign minister stated Belgium’s intent to recognize a Palestinian state during the UN General Assembly.

“Belgian Prime Minister de Wever is a weak leader who seeks to appease Islamic terrorism by sacrificing Israel,” the PMO’s post read. “He wants to feed the terrorist crocodile before it devours Belgium. Israel won’t go along and will continue to defend itself.”

Belgian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Prevot formally announced Belgium’s intention to join France, Canada, and the UK in recognizing a Palestinian state at the UN General Assembly in September on Tuesday.

Prevot addressed sanctions placed on Israel by Belgium, citing “international obligations” to “prevent any risk of genocide.” He went on, claiming that the sanctions are “not about sanctioning the Israeli people but about ensuring that their government respects international and humanitarian law and taking action to try to change the situation on the ground.”

“Any antisemitism or glorification of terrorism by Hamas supporters will also be more strongly condemned,” Prevot also noted in his post.

European recognition of a Palestinian state

Belgium’s recognition will come as part of a joint initiative by France and Saudi Arabia, which aims to “preserve the chances of a two-state solution.”

French President Emmanuel Macron announced France’s intention to recognize a Palestinian state at the upcoming UN General Assembly in September in an X/Twitter post in late July.

Since the announcement, countless other European countries have expressed their interest in recognizing a Palestinian state in September.
