Passengers Scream in Terror as Out-of-Control Bus Hits Several Vehicles, Injuring at Least 13, After ‘Braking System Failure’

At least 13 people were injured after bus crashed into several vehicles due to a “braking system failure” in the Brazilian city of São Paulo.

Passengers traveling on the busy inter-city bus on Monday, Nov. 17, were left terrified when the vehicle lost control for nearly one minute after the brakes failed. The bus hit around 15 cars and two motorcycles at 10 mph, leaving 13 people injured, CNN Brasil reported.

According to Brazilian outlet G1, the incident occurred on a road adjacent to the Raposo Tavares Highway at around 7:30 a.m. local time, citing the highway management company, Ecovias Raposo Castello.

Video footage provided by G1 and local outlet Osascomunica shows the bus hitting the curb before mounting the sidewalk and crashing into numerous vehicles, as passengers can be heard screaming. The panicked passengers are later seen getting off the bus after the vehicle ends up crashing into the gate of a condominium, per CNN Brasil.

Two serious, two moderate and eight minor injuries were reported, per G1, with the accident being blamed upon a “braking system failure,” according to the Ecovias Raposo Castello.

The outlet reports that assistance was provided at the scene by the Ecovias Raposo Castello. The Fire Department and SAMU (Mobile Emergency Care Service) also assisted the victims, who were taken to nearby hospitals.

The accident took place when the bus was crowded during rush hour, with many passengers standing in the aisle of the bus. The video footage shared by G1 shows the driver gripping tightly to the steering wheel as the vehicle appears to be out of control. The bus only comes to a standstill when it hits the gates of a condominium close to the highway.

The Civil Police opened an investigation to determine the causes of the accident, per CNN Brasil, who also noted that a technical examination was carried out on the bus.

PEOPLE contacted concessionaire Ecovias Raposo Castello, the Public Security Secretariat (SSP) and the Civil Police for further updates, but did not immediately receive a response.
