Russia-Ukraine war updates: Putin nuclear move as Zelensky marks 1000 days
President Vladimir Putin has approved Russia’s updated nuclear doctrine to share the country’s nuclear deterrence with its allies—mirroring NATO‘s “attack on one member is an attack on all” doctrine, as President Zelensky of Ukraine marks 1,000 days since Russia invaded his country.
On February 24, 2022, the world was shaken by the sight of Russian tanks advancing into Ukraine, marking the beginning of a full-scale invasion. In the 1,000 days since, the conflict has evolved dramatically, with the front lines between the two nations shifting amidst intense battles and geopolitical tension, which has intensified the global risk of nuclear war.
Putin’s decree on Tuesday emphasizes that Russia’s top state priority is deterring aggression from potential adversaries against itself and its allies in that nuclear deterrence should ensure “an understanding by a potential adversary of the inevitability of retaliation in the event of aggression against the Russian Federation and its allies.”
