SLS Playa Mujeres debut: What to expect from the chic all-inclusive in Costa Mujeres

When I touched down in Cancún in December (2024) and headed north to Costa Mujeres, I was eager to see how SLS Playa Mujeres, the first all-inclusive resort by the SLS brand, would blend style, convenience, and that signature SLS buzz. Recently opened in November 2024, the property is still smoothing out a few kinks in terms of service, but that’s often to be expected from a brand-new hotel. Having reviewed dozens of top-tier resorts in Mexico over the years—from boutique hideaways to sprawling five-star enclaves—I’m always curious to see if a newcomer can deliver its unique vibe. I’m glad to say SLS Playa Mujeres feels both fresh and familiar, offering a sophisticated beach holiday that stays true to SLS’s design-forward DNA.

A lush introduction

The resort has a lush ambiance to it open spaces.

Nestled in a private, gated area of Costa Mujeres—just around a 30-minute drive from Cancún International Airport—SLS Playa Mujeres is set amid lush greenery and sleek architecture. Living rooftops, swaying palm trees, and manicured gardens weave a nature-focused element into the resort’s contemporary silhouette. Despite its quiet feel, you’re not cut off from the area’s top attractions: the ferry terminal to Isla Mujeres is conveniently close if you fancy snorkeling, local cuisine, or exploring vibrant street art on the island.

Inside, you’ll see a sleek yet welcoming design that reflects SLS’s cosmopolitan roots. Warm woods, airy layouts, and thoughtful lighting ensure the resort feels contemporary without being stark. When you add the friendly staff, the stage is set for a stylish, easygoing escape—though there are still a few soft spots as the resort finds its footing.

Pet friendly (with caveats)

Because I always travel with my service dog Poppy, I’m especially aware of how resorts I visit handle pet policies (different from service dog policies). SLS Playa Mujeres allows dogs, but with restrictions: pups aren’t permitted in pool areas or restaurants, not even outdoor seating. If you’re specifically looking for a hotel where pups receive five-star pampering, this region has better dog-friendly resorts. But if your vacation is more about the SLS experience, and you want your pup with you in your own space – Poppy loved lounging on our furnished balcony with its sea breeze and early morning zoomie runs on the beach — the resort still fits the bill.

Pools, parties, and the Privilege lounge

One of the main draws of a tropical getaway is the pool scene, and SLS Playa Mujeres delivers with multiple options. There’s the lively Privilege adults-only lounge, which is SLS’s third such venue worldwide (joining Dubai and Baha Mar). Expect curated music, a stylish crowd, and bartenders mixing inventive cocktails throughout the day. I enjoyed the energetic vibe—especially if you’re here with friends or for a bach party.

If you prefer less excitement, you can easily slip away to calmer pools tucked farther from the main action or hit the family-friendly pool area if you’re traveling with kids. While the snack selection by the pools could be more expansive, the staff is friendly and attentive, and the cocktails I sampled never disappointed.

A beach for breezy days

Though the pools are popular, the resort’s beach offers a more laid-back experience. The resort sits behind a pretty stretch of bright white sand beach that meets clear turquoise water. The sea was also relatively void of the Sargassum (seagrass) that often plagues Cancun area beaches. Rows of inviting cabanas and loungers line the shore, and waitstaff will swing by to refresh drinks or bring light bites. It’s an excellent spot for those who love wading in gentle waves or need time to unplug under the Caribbean sun.

If you like a bit of adventure, consider water sports such as paddle-boarding or jet-ski rentals, or hop over to Isla Mujeres for a day of exploring. But I’ll admit, there’s something blissful about staying put with a cold mezcal cocktail (there are plenty of premium labels here) and the ocean shimmering at your feet.

SLS Elite for an upgraded experience

If you’re celebrating a special occasion—or want to dial up the indulgence—consider upgrading to an SLS Elite room or suite. These accommodations come with perks like private lounge access, preferred dining reservations, an exclusive beach area, and personalized check-in. Some rooms span two levels, with private rooftop jacuzzis and panoramic sea views, perfect for an intimate gathering or a friend group getaway. SLS Elite guests also enjoy butler service, a premium spirits package, airport transfers for extended stays, and a complimentary Ciel Spa thermal bath experience. You even get bespoke reusable water bottles and chic beach totes to use around the resort—a subtle touch emphasizing sustainability and style.

In my opinion, the Elite tier is a natural fit for couples on a honeymoon, bachelorette parties aiming for that VIP vibe, or any traveler looking to add a layer of pampered luxury. It ensures you won’t have to worry about snagging dinner reservations at peak times, and the dedicated services make your stay feel that much more personalized.

18 dining and drinking destinations

An all-inclusive experience thrives or fails on its dining, and SLS Playa Mujeres aims to impress with 18 restaurants and bars scattered around the property. Caracol, helmed by James Beard Award winner Chef Hugo Ortega from Puebla, quickly became a standout for me. I savored hearty Mexican dishes that showcased bold flavors, fresh seafood, and inventive twists on classic recipes.

If you’re in the mood for steak, Union is the resort’s answer to a high-quality steakhouse, with well-prepared cuts and a decent wine selection. Meanwhile, Fi’lia satisfies cravings for handmade pasta and wood-fired pizzas—perfectly paired with a smoky mezcal, my personal favorite spirit. Although I didn’t manage to check out every single venue, the overall scene is diverse enough to keep most palates happy.

Family-friendly meets social scene

One thing I noticed and appreciated about SLS Playa Mujeres is how it attracts a variety of guests—families, couples, solo travelers, and friend groups. The resort includes amenities like a kids’ club, a designated family pool, and activities that cater to younger guests, making it a solid choice if you’re traveling with children. At the same time, the adults-only areas offer that grown-up vibe when you need a break. During my visit, I saw a destination wedding in full swing, bachelorette parties toasting by the pool, and families exploring the beach—proof you can find whatever pace suits your mood.

Spa bliss

Between poolside relaxation, strolls on the beach, and late-night cocktails, make time for the Ciel Spa. Its bright and calming design features natural textures that set a relaxing tone. I treated myself to a deep tissue massage and felt my travel tension melt away. The CBD hot stone treatment or a Royal Citrus Ritual also get good reviews. Groups of friends or couples might want to book treatments together for an added dose of pampering.

With a fresh resort, especially one that only opened in November 2024, there can be growing pains, but SLS Playa Mujeres carries itself with a flair that’s distinctly SLS—modern, playful, yet rooted in quality. Here’s what to keep in mind:

  • Check for promotions: New openings often mean introductory deals or added perks, so monitor the SLS Playa Mujeres or ALL Inclusive Collection websites for current offers.

  • Upgrade if you can: If you’re celebrating a special occasion, the SLS Elite experience can make your stay feel more VIP, from private lounge access to butler service.

  • Explore local highlights: The nearby ferry allows you to effortlessly reach Isla Mujeres for snorkeling, shopping, or sampling local eateries.

  • Embrace the mix: Families, solo travelers, bachelor or bachelorette groups—everyone finds their niche here, thanks to a range of activities and social spaces.

  • Mind the pet rules: If you’re bringing a dog, be aware of the resort’s limitations around common areas.
