Ten healthcare workers arrested in ‘complex’ police investigation into serious allegations
Ten staff members at a mental health hospital have been arrested and bailed on a number of charges, including wilful neglect.
A number of investigations have been launched into alleged incidents at St Andrew’s Hospital, Northampton, which provides private mental health support for hundreds of patients.
The largest of the investigations surrounds allegations of assault made in July 2025.
Eight people were arrested on suspicion of wilful neglect and ill treatment by a care worker in relation to incident.
In a statement, Northamptonshire Police said: “This complex investigation is on-going, with all eight people arrested remaining on bail.”
One person is under investigation in relation to the death of a man in February 2025.
Initially, five people were arrested on suspicion of corporate manslaughter and gross negligence manslaughter in relation to the incident. However, four people were later released with no further action being taken.

Detectives have also launched an investigation into an alleged assault in June 2025.
A woman has been arrested on suspicion of assault and ill treatment, and has since been released on bail.
Officers had also initially launched an probe into corporate manslaughter and gross negligence manslaughter following the death of a teenage girl in October 2024.
However, the investigation was later dropped.
Northamptonshire Police said in a statement: “Following a robust examination of the evidence, and in consultation with the Crown Prosecution Service, it has been decided that no further action will be taken in relation to this incident.”
They added that a report would be prepared for the coroner ahead of an inquest.
A spokesperson for Northamptonshire Police said: “Detectives from CID and the major crime team have been involved in a number of investigations into incidents that are alleged to have taken place at St Andrews Hospital, Northampton.
“Due to the nature of the investigations, we remain in contact with the Care Quality Commission the independent regulator of health and social care.
“We continue to work tirelessly to establish what happened in each of these incidents, and ask anyone who may have any information that could assist us to contact us on 101.”
‘Zero-tolerance approach to poor practice’
A spokesperson for St Andrew’s Healthcare said that they had reported the cases to police.
“As a charity, we are committed to full transparency, and take a zero-tolerance approach to any allegation of harm or poor practice,” they said.
“We immediately reported these cases to the police for investigation.
“Following their own independent investigation, the police concluded that no further action was required in one case, and closed it. The remaining cases are ongoing.
“Patient safety is our highest priority, and we have an urgent action plan to strengthen the quality of care we provide.
“We acknowledge that care at our Northampton hospital hasn’t always met the standards every patient deserves, and we are sorry to those affected.”
They added that they had launched a new plan for patient care, which included new training for all frontline staff.
