Warming centers opening amid extreme cold temperatures

CHARLESTON, S.C. (WCBD) – Warming shelters are expected to open starting Sunday as a strong arctic cold front brings bitterly cold temperatures to the Lowcountry.

Seacoast Church Summerville will be open Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday for those seeking a warm place to stay.

Guests can head to the shelter at 301 E. 5th N. Street in Summerville and be admitted starting at 7 p.m. each day. Checkout is at 7 a.m. the following morning.

Pets will be able to stay at a mobile shelter next to the warming center, where they can get free vaccinations, a physical exam, and food.

Holy City Missions at Aldersgate will also open their shelter on Sunday and Monday.

Guests can register at 1444 Remount Road from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. each day and stay until the shelter closes at 7 a.m. the following morning.

A hot dinner, breakfast, a grab-and-go lunch, a hot shower, warm clothes, toiletries, and an optional devotion will be available.

To get a connecting ride, board the CARTA Route 13 and request the Holy City Warming Shelter at Aldersgate. The shelter has a capacity of 65 people.

Forecasters say temperatures will warm slightly throughout the day but are only expected to reach the low 40s, which is roughly 20 degrees below average for the time of year.

The anticipated conditions prompted the National Weather Service to issue an Extreme Cold Watch advisory beginning Sunday evening through Monday morning.
