What is Mike Tyson’s net worth after Jake Paul fight?
Entertainment gossip and news from Newsweek’s network of contributors
In spite of his decisive defeat at the hands of Youtuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul on Friday, November 15, Mike Tyson has been widely considered one of the greatest boxers of all time in his prime. Despite his great success, however, the athlete’s net worth has fluctuated significantly over the years.
Finance website The Street estimates that in his heyday, Tyson was worth over $400 million. The boxer, now 58, lived lavishly and made several bad business investments. He also was involved in some controversial behavior, including infamously biting the ear of opponent Evander Holyfield in 1997, and his imprisonment for rape in 1995. According to AfroTech, a combination of all these factors caused the fighter to file for bankruptcy in 2003. Tyson was about $23 million in debt when he claimed bankruptcy, The New York Times reported.
Through a combination of paid appearances, endorsements, and a successful cannabis business, Tyson managed to get himself out of debt and then some. Tyson also hosts a YouTube podcast and created the Legends Only League, which provides a venue in which retired athletes can compete. The Street estimates that Tyson’s net worth before the fight against Paul, 27, was around $10 million.
Fortune reported that Paul was paid $40 million for his fight against Tyson, while the older boxer allegedly received a lesser sum of only $20 million for his role. If those numbers are accurate, that would put Tyson at a net worth of around $30 million, tripling his net worth in one night.
Jake Paul, meanwhile, has an estimated net worth of around $80 million, according to the Celebrity Net Worth website. According to ESPN, the fight between Tyson and Paul was the most heavily wagered fight in years. A spokesperson for BetMGM said that there was more money wagered on their faceoff “than any other boxing match or MMA fight in sportsbook BetMGM’s nearly seven-year history.” Paul won by unanimous decision in a fight that went the full eight rounds.
