Woman shares reactions to her going gray in 30s: “Everyone has an opinion”
While going gray has long been seen as a symbol of aging, many women are now embracing the change in hair color instead of turning to dye—but some are still divided over the look.
One of these women committing to their natural color is Sarah, known on social media as @sarahgrayandtall, who often brings her followers along as she shares how she’s “embracing my gray in my 30s.”
In a recent video shared to her Instagram account, Sarah pulled in over 11.6 million views and 414,000 likes as she shared her journey to gray over the last three years.
Sarah, who appears to have been using a dark shade to cover her hair before her decision to give it up, stepped away from the dye and let her new natural color—gray—shine as she let it grow.
While the process proved to be a marathon, not a sprint and may have created an unconventional look for a few months, the result was well worth the wait.
Starting with a hint of gray at the root, the color soon traveled down the lengths of her hair as it grew, even looking as if she’d added brunette extensions to a gray bob at some points.
The video also highlighted some of the comments she had received during her hair journey, with negative thoughts about her hair often shared by viewers who told her, “You need to dye your hair.”
Going fully gray is a “trust the process” moment, to say the least, but if you’re considering making the change, you’re not alone.
Jennifer Korab, the founder of Renaissance Salon & Spa in New Jersey, told Newsweek that “there’s been a rise in people embracing their natural gray hair, influenced by movements toward authenticity and self-acceptance.”
Korab revealed three pieces of advice for embarking on your gray hair journey.
1. Starting the Transition
“Beginning the journey to natural gray hair can be freeing. I would start by consulting with your hairstylist to develop a plan that gradually blends your dyed hair with your natural gray,” Korab said.
“This can include techniques like balayage or highlights to soften the contrast as your roots begin to grow out.”
2. Caring for Gray Hair
“Proper care for gray hair is crucial, as it can be more prone to dryness and brittleness,” said Korab.
“Use hydrating shampoos and conditioners specifically formulated for gray hair and incorporate regular deep-conditioning treatments to maintain moisture and shine.”
3. Expect Some Changes
“When transitioning to gray hair, you might notice changes in texture. Gray hair can be coarser and wirier than colored hair, requiring more conditioning and gentle handling,” Korab said.
“Additionally, using a purple shampoo once a week can help neutralize any yellowing and keep your gray looking vibrant.”
The haircare expert said that she has noticed an increase in the number of clients going to the gray side.
“There’s been a rise in people embracing their natural gray hair, influenced by movements toward authenticity and self-acceptance. I find this empowering, allowing individuals to express their natural beauty and age with confidence,” Korab said.
What Do the Comments Say?
The comments section brought a mixed bag of both support and perhaps overly honest opinions about the look.
“You’re very pretty and now it’s grown out, it looks great,” wrote one user. “Trust the process. I started getting silver hairs at 24 after my first baby. After seeing this, I’m a lot less concerned about how I’ll look because your hair looks AMAZING.”
“I love this!! You have such a beautiful grey color and I personally think it somehow made you look younger. Makes your eyes pop,” another user commented.
Others weren’t as kind, with some calling the look a “turn off” and telling Sarah she looked older with gray hair.
Some users spoke out against the internet’s harshest critics, as one said, “Isn’t it interesting that everyone has an opinion about someone else’s hair. Normalize minding your own business.”
“Everyone gets gray hair weirdos, y’all need to get over yourselves in the comments. Aging is normal. Gray hair is normal.” another person commented. “Get offline and go outside and meet real people. She looks amazing and there is nothing wrong with her.”
