Below is a personal interview with Jessica Velazquez so you can get to know her story.

Tell us about yourself: Share your background, interests, and what motivates you in your chosen field or passions.

I am from Elizabeth, NJ of Puerto Rican descent. I wanted to be an attorney but as I got older, my interest changed. I never thought I would be in the cigar industry. As a kid I hated being around the smell. I am so happy that my friend suggested I get into the industry because it has been such a positive change in my life. I understand that since I don’t smoke myself, I lack the experience of the cigar. That drives me to make sure that I don’t disappoint the customers with the lounge itself. I want everyone to come in and feel comfortable along with feeling like they are well catered to.

How did you begin your journey with JJ Cigar lounge? Could you take us through the key moments that have shaped your path so far?

In 2016 or 2017, my friend gave me the idea. I remember months later in 2017, I interviewed him as to what I needed to accomplish this. I thought I was going to have this somewhere in NJ. Then my childhood home burned down in 2018. I was devastated. I knew, if I wasn’t in that house, I would not want to live in NJ. That is exactly what happened months later in 2019 when I looked at my surroundings and thought, I can’t live here anymore. I am going to move to Puerto Rico and I am going to have a cigar lounge on the beach. I gave myself 1-2 years to move. Two years later in 2021, I packed my bags and left for this beautiful island.

What inspired you to pursue JJ Cigar Lounge, and why is it your chosen path?

It wasn’t something that I would have imagined getting into at all. I have a friend that owns a shop in New Jersey. Whenever I would be in the area, I would stop by his shop but as soon as I would step in, I would need to leave as I could not take the smell. I find it funny that he even suggested I enter the cigar world, but I immediately thought it was a good idea as I saw the potential and direction this was going.

Are there specific individuals, mentors, or role models who have had a significant influence on your journey?

I have met many people as I was doing my research that I call friends and family now. They are cigar lounge owners, managers, employees, customers and cigar reps. They are mainly in NJ and some scattered in Puerto Rico that also own their own lounges. While the idea seemed strange to all of them that I wanted to open a cigar lounge even though I don’t smoke, the great information they gave me was an honor that they were still willing to help me achieve my goal and dream. I am so grateful that I can just pick up the phone and either ask their advice or just have a conversation as I can talk a lot.

Could you share some of your most significant or memorable achievements or experiences in your field or area of interest?

I remember I went to an event at another lounge in Puerto Rico and there were a few people that I was getting introduced to. At that point, I had not opened the lounge yet, but I was publicizing it. A lot of people said they heard about the lounge and one person even said, wow you are JJ. I laughed. I felt a little famous. I was ecstatic when I was finally on Google. When I opened my lounge and the day of my grand opening, I had people in the industry come to celebrate. It is those moments that makes this feel legitimate.

Looking back, what do you consider your most important work or contribution to date, and why? Future Plans and Aspirations:

Not just deciding to get into this industry and announcing I was going to do it, but actually accomplishing it. Many people say they are going to do something but never actually do it. They allow the hiccups to get in the way. I know it is easy to say, but it wasn’t one day to the next with this endeavor. This was years in the making until I was finally able to find a location and open. Obstacles are going to come and possibly delay things but you need to push through it. The original location and open date was not accomplished but the dream of my cigar place was. I want to expand this place and that will come with time.

What exciting projects, goals, or plans do you have for the future in your career or area of interest?

I do have many projects that I want to accomplish for my current lounge that I will keep to myself for the moment. When the time comes to realize those plans, I will definitely announce them. All in due time. I also want to open other businesses that I am also keeping to myself for the moment. There is always someone out there that will try to take your idea from you. Once certain things are set in motion, I will be elated to let everyone know.

How do you see your field evolving or changing in the coming years, and how do you aim to adapt or contribute to those changes?

Cigars have been around for thousands of years. The beauty of the industry now versus years ago is the advancement of this time. The tobacco farms cultivating the leaf and learning how to blend one leaf with another from different regions/ countries. The skill that the master blenders possess to create such aromatic and delicious blends for the consumer is artistry. This widens the range of consumers and I get to provide that variety to my customers. The cigar world is ever growing in popularity. I am just thrilled that I get to provide a sanctuary for many to enjoy.

Personal Details: If applicable, could you provide us with some relevant personal details or characteristics that define you or your work?

Professional Details: My educational background is in Criminal Justice. That degree did not prepare me to have a lounge. I am proud that I went to school and have my degrees but had I known I was going to go in a different direction than criminal justice, I would have chosen business. For those that studied and are doing something different, it is ok. Life continues and usually for the better.I believe that I would have been a stressed out person had I continued in that path. I am much happier with this decision. Being my own boss comes with a lot of responsibility, but this was my path that I want to move forward with.

Could you share your current professional status and location? If relevant, do you have a willingness to relocate or travel for your work or interests? Principles and Values:

I love being the owner of my own business. At one point, I did see a location that I fell in love with. I was ready to move but the owners of the building decided to change the price on me. I accepted it as something that was not meant for me even though I saw the great potential in that place. Now, I have much more appreciation for my place as my mothers husband helped build it. He recently passed away so I just want to expand the place I have now instead of going somewhere else.

What core principles or values guide you in your profession or area of interest?

I want those that walk through the door to have an amazing experience. With that, the hospitality needs to be one of understanding that the customer is spending their money, not yours and you need to respect certain things. I do not get upset if someone buys cigars and goes home instead of staying. There have been some people that come to the lounge expecting a dive lounge with loud music and decide to leave. That is ok too. I will never drink at the lounge. People have invited me to drink in the lounge and I will accept water or sprite. Other than that, I want to make sure I am always alert of what is going on. I don’t want to offend people by saying yes to a drink for some and not others so I don’t drink with anyone.

How do you approach your work or passions on a day-to-day basis? Are there specific philosophies or practices that you follow?

Aside from cleaning and making sure that the lighters have gas, I just focus on it being a new day. Each day is a new opportunity to make the person that walks through the door for the first time have a positively memorable experience that they can speak about to friends and family. There are days that it is filled with people and there are days that only 1 person shows up.
