Men, What’s Stopping You From Dressing Like Hamnet’s Jessie Buckley?

But Buckley’s biggest fit of all arrived just last week, when she popped up in frosty New York for an appearance on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert. The ensemble was fully and delightfully monochrome: deep navy trousers and a zipped Harrington jacket, all neatly tucked beneath a look-at-me trench coat.

On the Hamnet press tour, Buckley has mainly been working with stylist Danielle Goldberg, who’s become something of a Cool Girl whisperer in recent years, dressing the likes of Ayo Edebiri, Greta Lee, and Zoë Kravitz. (Powerhouse stylist Karla Welch has also been in the mix for some of Buckley’s appearances.) Goldberg’s signature move is putting A-list actresses in the sort of simple, confident outfits that any downtown dude would be thrilled to wear—think The Row-esque overcoats, trendy yet accessible sneakers, and loose romantic suiting.

Despite often appearing next to her Hamnet costar Paul Mescal, who is certainly no slouch in the style department, Buckley has been able to carve her own lane sartorially on this press tour. Virtually all of her looks are built on the foundational pieces lurking in most people’s closets—blazers and trousers, sneakers and loafers, excellent knits—but Buckley’s recent run offers a lesson in how the right silhouettes, colors, and proportions can transform simple staples into something greater than the sum of their parts. Any guy would do well to take a page or two from her playbook.
