Middle East Professional Boxing Commission: Redefining the Global Boxing Landscape under Jose Mohan’s Leadership
In recent years, the Middle East Professional Boxing (MEPB) Commission has rapidly gained recognition as a formidable player in the international boxing scene. Spearheaded by the visionary leadership of Jose Mohan, the MEPB has transformed the region into a dynamic boxing hub that is beginning to rival some of the world’s most iconic boxing cities, such as Las Vegas and New York.
Jose Mohan’s influence in boxing extends well beyond his role with the MEPB. As a respected board member of the World Boxing Council (WBC), he has become a pivotal figure in shaping the sport’s global direction. His strategic guidance and deep knowledge have been crucial in bringing some of the most anticipated boxing matches to the Middle East, with these events often being sanctioned by the WBC and other major organizations like the WBO, WBA, IBF, and IBO.
A landmark achievement for the MEPB was its role in the historic undisputed heavyweight title fight held in Riyadh. This event marked a significant milestone, showcasing the commission’s ability to host high-stakes, globally significant matches. The MEPB’s rapid progress is further highlighted by its involvement in sanctioning over 100 Shows, a clear indicator of the growing enthusiasm for boxing across the region.

Reflecting on the progress, Jose Mohan, President of the Middle East Professional Boxing Commission, shared his insights: “A decade ago, the region saw only one boxing event annually. Today, we’re witnessing more than 15 regional fights each year, excluding the high-profile super fights and world-title bouts hosted in the Kingdom. The sport has seen a remarkable rise in popularity, with more young people taking up boxing as a career path. This is evident in the increase of amateur events, a burgeoning Arab fan base, and more engagement on social media. Furthermore, boxing has become an essential part of fitness routines for both men and women in the region.”
Mohan also expressed optimism about the future, suggesting that the emergence of a homegrown boxing star could propel the sport to new heights within the Middle East.
The rise of boxing in the Middle East can largely be credited to the foresight and strategic planning of the MEPB’s leadership. They anticipated the sport’s potential in the region and laid a solid foundation for its growth. Support from governmental initiatives, such as Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and the UAE’s sports development programs, has been instrumental in this process, using boxing as a key tool for societal development. This collaborative effort has successfully attracted some of the sport’s most prominent figures and major events to the region.
Despite these successes, the journey to establish the Middle East as a global boxing destination has been challenging. In its early stages, boxing was relatively unknown in the region, requiring substantial investments to promote the sport and nurture local talent. The MEPB played a critical role by investing millions of dollars, particularly in the UAE, to build a strong local boxing infrastructure. This included training local teams and bringing in international expertise to fill the gap left by the absence of established local commissions. The commission’s dedication over the past decade, supported by significant financial backing, has been key to achieving the success we see today.
One of the key initiatives supported by the MEPB is the Rising Stars Arabia (RSA) series. While not initiated by the commission, the RSA has received substantial backing and is focused on cultivating talent from the Middle East, North Africa, India, Pakistan, and Iran. The aim is to create global boxing stars, with the hope that an Arab boxer will soon headline major events in the region. With a population of 500 million across the Middle East and North Africa, the potential for a regional boxing superstar is immense. Backed by key figures like Ahmed Seddiqi and supported by Abu Dhabi’s tourism board, the RSA series is poised to significantly influence the future of boxing in the region.

Looking forward, the MEPB has set both immediate and long-term objectives. In the short term, the focus is on strengthening the regional boxing ecosystem by training officials, raising public awareness, and encouraging youth participation. In the long term, the goals include developing regional promoters, enhancing education on boxing safety, and producing world-class referees and judges. Ultimately, the MEPB envisions an Arab boxer becoming a world champion, headlining a major global event in the Middle East.
The MEPB’s mission is clear: to establish the Middle East as a global powerhouse in the boxing world. With a realistic plan spanning the next three to five years, the commission is confident that the region will soon see its champions rise to prominence on the international stage, securing a lasting legacy for Middle Eastern boxing.
