Russian prison guards taken hostage as gunshots heard: Reports
Several detainees, including those linked to the Islamic State group, took two Russian guards hostage at a pre-trial detention center in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, Russian media reported on Sunday.
Footage widely circulated on Russian Telegram channels appeared to show the Russian facility as gunshots rang out, and a number of detainees wielding knives and sharp objects against staff.
A clip published by the Baza Telegram channel, which purports to have links to Russia’s security services, appeared to show at least one ambulance arriving at the facility.
Russia’s Interfax news agency reported that the prisoners demanded a car and the chance to leave the facility freely, citing emergency services.
In a later update, Interfax reported that the hostage-takers had been killed. The prison staff “were released and were not injured,” Russia’s federal penitentiary service said in a statement carried by the news agency.
