Austin Butler Is Learning How to Cook Thanks in Part to Jeremy Allen White
Petrichor.
Is that what it’s called, petrichor?
That’s the smell of rain on dirt. Like how it smells amazing after it rains? That’s petrichor.
Wow. I love that smell. I had a candle that was like concrete after the rain.
Oh yeah, the D.S. & Durga one.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. I got that in Australia. I like that one.
How are you approaching getting dressed these days?
I mean, I like to just keep it simple a lot of the time. And I like old clothes. Clothes that have lived a life before.
You like hearing stories about them?
If I can, if you can find them. Sometimes you can’t, so you kind of make up the story yourself. But there’s certain people like Bob Melet who sources really great pieces and you’re able to hear more of the details of it. But I just like the way they feel. But I tend to keep it simple, jeans and a T-shirt all the time. I wear a lot of Levi’s, I would say, as far as denim goes.
Do you do anything special for your grooming routine or style before an event?
I feel fortunate that I’ve got people like Jamie [Taylor] who’s here, who… She’ll make me not look tired. She’s got this little thing that massages the face, you know those things? It gets cold.
It’s metal?
Yeah. I like that thing. That always feels really good. And then she has moisturizer or whatever that she puts on.
Anything you do to prepare mentally for those events? Power poses in the mirror?
Just breathe.
Are you big on meditation or anything like that?
Yeah, I meditated this morning. Sometimes I’ll even use that Sam Harris app, The Waking Up app, which I’ve had that for years on my phone. And some days it’s nice when somebody walks you through it and other days when you’re just more just paying attention to what’s going on and meeting yourself where you are that day.
Do you do anything else in the morning to maintain your mental health?
I don’t keep my phone by my bed. That’s something I’ve started doing that I really find value in. So then I don’t look at the phone for the first hour of the day at least.
Cold shower, meditate, make coffee. I’m big into my espresso maker. I enjoy that. Write usually in the morning and then start seeing what else I need to do that day.
What projects are you excited about coming up?
I’m excited about Miami Vice. Right now I’m learning about that time period, which is the ’80s, and what was going on in Miami during that time. So I’m reading a couple different books currently on that.
What are you reading?
There’s this one called Hotel Scarface: [Where Cocaine Cowboys Partied and Plotted to Control Miami]. Sort of about what was going on in the cocaine world of Miami at that time. And then there’s another one about undercover DEA agents that I’m finding really interesting as well.
What did you think about the fashion at that time?
Armani from the ’80s and ’90s was really incredible.
You like the exaggerated silhouettes?
I felt like they weren’t stiff. They look comfortable. They look like you could be in it all day
What else are you looking forward to beyond Miami Vice?
I just got back home here, to LA and I’ll get to be here for a little bit. I’m excited to have dinners with friends and cook and play music and take a little bit of time to just go out into nature and that sort of thing.
